University Student Visa

Study in South Korea — D-2 & D-4 visa guide

For students from Nepal, the most common visa for higher studies in South Korea is the D-2 visa, for study at a university or higher educational institution. नेपाली विद्यार्थीहरूका लागि पूरा जानकारी एकै ठाउँमा।

1Student visa types for South Korea

D-2 Visa (General Student Visa)

  • Eligibility: For students enrolled in degree programs (bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral) at recognised universities. You need a 3.0 GPA in your previous course, TOPIK II or higher, and IELTS 6.0–6.5. A few universities may accept a 2.8 GPA, but this is now rare (before 2025 most universities accepted 2.8).
  • Validity: Usually issued for the length of your program (e.g. 1 year, renewable).

D-2-2Graduate (master’s or doctoral) students
D-2-3Exchange students
D-2-4Students in Korean language programs

D-4 Visa (Language Program Visa)

  • Eligibility: For students in Korean language programs. Many universities run Korean language programs for international students, and the D-4 visa is the right one for them.
  • Validity: Usually 6 months to 1 year, and it can be extended.

2How to apply for a D-2 student visa

  1. 1

    Step 1: University admission

First get accepted into a degree program at a South Korean university. The university issues an admission letter and a Certificate of Admission — you need both for the visa.

    • Completed application form (usually on the university website)
    • Academic transcripts and certificates
    • Proof of language proficiency (TOPIK, or TOEFL/IELTS)
    • Financial proof that you can support yourself
    • Letters of recommendation (if the university asks)
    • Passport copy and passport-size photos
  2. 2

    Step 2: Visa documents

With your admission letter, prepare the visa documents:

    • Valid passport
    • Completed visa application form
    • Admission letter from the Korean university
    • Proof of financial support (bank statement or sponsor letter)
    • Proof of previous education
    • Recent passport-size photos
    • Visa fee payment receipt
  3. 3

    Step 3: Submit the application

Submit at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Nepal — in person or, in some cases, through a visa agency.

  4. 4

Step 4: Visa interview (if asked)

The embassy may interview you. Be ready to talk about your studies so far, why South Korea, your future plans and how you will pay for your studies.

  5. 5

    Step 5: Approval

Processing usually takes about 1–2 weeks. If approved, the embassy issues your student visa.

  6. 6

    Step 6: Arrival in Korea

Register at the local immigration office within 90 days to get your Alien Registration Card (ARC) — you need it to stay in South Korea.
